MetaZoo

A history of MetaZoo TCG sets and expansions.

Overview

MetaZoo is a trading card game built around the concept of cryptids — creatures from folklore, urban legend, and the paranormal. Players draft elemental decks, summon beasts from the unknown, and fight for mission points to secure victory. This page collects a chronological history of MetaZoo's card sets as represented in this index.

Each entry below covers a single release: its theme, mechanical focus, and the role it plays in the larger MetaZoo lineup. Sets are split into Main Sets, which form the backbone of the game, Alpha Sets, which include early demo decks, and Sub Sets, which include promotional convention cards, flex decks, prize packs and more.

Main Sets

MZ1 · Base Set

Base Set (MZ1) was released in March of 2025 and contains 239 cards. This set brought about the resurgence of MetaZoo with its first full set with the new owners.

The set features 214 base cards and an additional 25 Alt-Art and Hidden rare cards for a total of 239 cards. With the re-release of the TCG, the gameplay has been updated to a new system, and the first set released with four Aura types: Air, Earth, Fire, and Lightning.

MZ2 · Torrential Tides

Torrential Tides (MZ2) was the second main set released in August of 2025 and contains 212 base cards. This set introduced the Water Aura type, and also introduced a new rarity tier between the Alt-Art and Hidden Rarity called Legend Rares. In this set, they are distinguished by a black-and-white art style. In addition to its 212 base cards, it also contains an additional 28 Alt Art cards, 7 Hidden Rares, and 12 Legend Rares.

MZ3 · Secret Shadows

Secret Shadows was the third main set released for MetaZoo and introduced the Dark Aura type. It was released in November of 2025, despite delays. It contains 173 base cards, with an additional 28 Alt-Art, 15 Legend Rare, and 7 Hidden Rare cards for a total of 223 cards.

AS · Art Boxtoppers

Art Boxtoppers are a side product of each main set. Each main set also releases alongside rare alternate art booster boxes designed by the box art artist. These Alt-Art boxes also come with 4 exclusive Art promotional cards. The Alt-Art cards in each set follow the Aura theme of that set, with the cards released in the base set having one Creature from each of the base 4 Aura types. Similarly, the 4 from Torrential Tides were all of the Water Aura, and the 4 from Secret Shadows were all of the Dark Aura type.

Alpha Sets

Alpha Demo Packs were the first released product for the re-release of MetaZoo. Released in an issue of Card Pro Magazine, each copy came with one of the four Alpha Demo Decks, and an Alpha Promo Pack which contained 1 Holofoil card from the pool of 55 available alpha cards.

Play as a single deck, or split it into two 40-card decks and play head-to-head. This deck features Hodag and Dragon of Oconto Falls as the heavy hitters of each Aura.

CP25 · 2025 Convention Promos

Throughout 2025, MetaZoo went across the US to various conventions to showcase the new gameplay. At each convention, unique Convention Packs were available. Convention Pack boxes came in 20-pack and 50-pack boxes. Each pack had 2 identical cards in them, one to keep and one to trade. There were 50 cards available in the set, with 20 of them being full artworks and 30 of them being sketch artworks.

During the convention, if you were able to get all 20 full-art cards or all 30 of the sketch-art cards and bring them to the MetaZoo booth, they would emboss stamp them and allow you to choose a redemption prize. For each set of 20 full-art cards you could choose from 1 of 5 art cards (CP25-051 through CP25-055). The same could be done with the 30 sketch art cards and another set of exclusive redemption cards (CP25-056 through CP25-060).

PR · MetaZoo Promos

This set includes all promotional cards that have been released under the new MetaZoo. This set is constantly changing as additional promotional cards are announced and released. At each Collect-a-con throughout 2025, Mailbox cards were released that had 3 variations: Normal, Holo, and a unique STAFF stamped card. This set also includes promotional cards released alongside other products, such as the Walmart Blister packs and the Dynamic Decks.

PZ1 · Prize Pack 1

Prize Packs are a reward for participating in Organized Play (OP). Packs contain cards from a pool of 20 different cards in this series. Additionally, this set introduces Serialized Cards to the pool of cards. Cards can be found in X/100, X/75, X/50, X/25, X/15, X/10, X/5, and 1/1 serializations. Each tier of serialized card has a different border to its art, and the images used in this database showcase the signed 1/1 variants.

Gameplay

Gameplay was entirely revamped in the re-release of MetaZoo. Gameplay now revolves around controlling lanes via the total influence that your creatures, equipment, and strategies afford you in each lane. Players take turns taking actions; playing cards, casting creatures, using abilities, and declaring missions. When one player has no more available actions, the round is over. Rounds continue until 1 player reaches 30 victory points to win the game.

Rarity & Variants

Cards in Main sets are organized by the following rarities. Each subsequent tier is rarer than the one before it:

  • Common
  • Uncommon
  • Rare
  • Super Rare
  • Alt Art
  • Legend
  • Hidden Rare

In sets aside from main sets, a card's rarity has been replaced with a rarity that reflects the set they are a part of. For example, all cards in the Alpha Demo Decks are of the rarity Alpha. Similarly, all cards released as promos have the rarity Promo. An upcoming non-main set, Yokai Rising, will also have its own rarity structure to signify it being from a non-main set.
